Sri Lanka rules out foreign judges in human rights probe

Sri Lanka on Friday completely ruled out any possibility of having foreign judges in its investigations on war time human rights abuses.

President Maithripala Sirisena told media heads in Colombo that Sri Lanka’s position was clearly communicated to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva last month.

Sri Lanka was represented at the Geneva session by Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana and Ministers Dr Sarath Amunugama and Faizer Mustapha.

At the UNHRC last month some countries, including Canada called on Sri Lanka to fulfill its international commitments by ensuring the involvement of Commonwealth and international investigators, prosecutors and judges in the accountability process.

The Canadian delegation in Geneva had said that Canada was disappointed by the slow progress in implementing commitments to advance peace and reconciliation, political stability, human rights and accountability.

Canada reiterated the desire for the Government of Sri Lanka to ensure that a process of accountability is established that will have the trust and confidence of the victims of this war.

Some Tamil groups have been saying that without the participation of foreign judges the accountability process will not be seen as being credible. (Colombo Gazette)

Canada has no business with this matter who was providing many support to terrorist supporters and helping to get funds with in their territory. Canada must mind their own business and let sri Lanka to handle this matter. if they are so disappointment better they keep few dollars helping to sri Lanka and keep .

Canadians that respect democratic values should not allow their MP’S to go to the extent of supporting pro LTTE sentiments to secure Tamil votes in Canada.Lttewas a murderous and illegal srilankan terrorist organisation that killed thousands of unarmed children and women in Srilanka.

The country is a banana republic. No law and order both for Tamils and Sinhalese. The Police and the IGP is a disgrace. No sri lankan can survive denying the truth. If the canadians decide to highlight it it is good for Sri Lanka. The Rulers as looters must be made to account

Canada has become the mouthpiece of Tamil Diaspora living there. Sri Lanka is capable of managing its own business. Canada should worry about their native Indians!

Sri Lanka is a good example that you can kill tens of thousands but still won’t be asked any questions because it is an “internal” matter and a “sovereign” state.

our judges are good but they will be very good if they apply article 126 (5) of our constitution which stipulates a petition filed in the Supreme Court should be completed within 2 months of filling the petition and also by making laws similar to article 126 (5) to all other courts including the magistrates courts by our MPs in parliament
