SLFP Minister and businessman brokered no-confidence motion

By Ashanthi Warunasuriya

A Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Minister and a top businessman had brokered the recent no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, The Sunday Leader learns.

Well informed sources said that the Minister, who later abstained from voting for the motion, had talks with the businessman, who is close to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to obtain support for the no-confidence motion in Parliament.

Sources said that despite initiating the process to submit a no-confidence motion the SLFP Minister made a sudden u-turn and urged some United Peoples’ Freedom Alliance (UPFA) party leaders not to support the no-confidence motion.

The Sunday Leader also learns that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had advised the joint opposition not to submit the no-confidence motion to Parliament without the signatures of at least five Government Ministers.

Rajapaksa was of the opinion that the no-confidence motion must come from within the Government and the joint opposition must then support it.

However as some SLFP Ministers had decided not to initiate the motion the joint opposition decided to sign the document and submit it to Parliament.

Rajapaksa had not signed the motion but was present when the document was handed over to the Speaker and also voted in support of the motion in Parliament.

The motion was eventually defeated but the SLFP Ministers who had later voted in support of the motion resigned from their Ministerial posts.

The former President has told his close associates that the joint opposition is prepared to protect the 16 SLFP Ministers and Parliamentarians who had voted for the  no-confidence motion.

The 16 SLFP Parliamentarians have said that they will sit with the opposition when Parliament reconvenes on May 8.

All UNP and Tamil MPs were part of Bond Scam so they had to vote against the NCM. But Muslim MPs voted for money. Also both USA and UK approved the Bond Scam as they want the destruction of SL economy.
