Sanga turns down invite to join cricket board

By Samantha Hewabandula

Former Sri Lanka cricket captain Kumar Sangakkara has turned down an invitation by Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha to be part of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

The Sports Minister had met Sangakkara on at least four occasions since taking office as the new Sports Minister.

The Sunday Leader learns that the Minister had discussed with Sangakkara the state of cricket in Sri Lanka and how it can be improved.

Sources said that the Minister had invited the former cricketer to be part of Sri Lanka cricket administration but Sangakkara had turned it down.

Sangakkara had told the Minister that there needs to be a complete overhaul of how cricket is managed in Sri Lanka.

He said that he stands ready to assist Sri Lanka Cricket together with other past senior cricketers.

The Sports Minister had then requested Sangakkara to put forward proposals on the way forward for Sri Lanka Cricket.

Sanga will come, I am sure, if there is no Sports Minister, No Politicians anywhere near the Cricket Board; but should have written assurance from Prez , that there will be no interference whatsoever.

  2. What a fool this minister is ? a great sportsman who turned down the presidents request to be the Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in UK will ever get involved in third grad business such as Cricket board. Minister should approach a low grade businessman who needs some polishing in his public life.
