Newly appointed NOC wants time to show results

The newly appointed National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri Lanka is confident of taking Sri Lanka to the next level.

However the NOC says it needs to be given time to show results as it has just taken over the administration.

NOC Vice President Asanga Seneviratne told The Sunday Leader online that the newly elected President of the NOC, Suresh Subramaniam, has already shown what he is capable of doing.

He said that Subramaniam had managed to secure Chinese assistance ahead of the South Asian Games in Nepal.

Following a deal with the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), Sri Lankan athletes will be hosted and trained at no cost.

COC President Gou Zhongwen made the commitment following a meeting with Subramaniam in Beijing recently.

Seneviratne said that over the next couple of years the NOC will look to get more assistance to take Sri Lanka to the next level in Olympic sports.

While performing well at South Asian and Asian level, Sri Lanka often struggles at Olympic Games.

Sri Lankan athletes have won a total of two Olympic silver medals, both in athletics.
