EU, Canada and Norway write to President on death penalty

The Delegation of the European Union, the missions of the EU Member States in Sri Lanka as well as the diplomatic missions of the Governments of Canada and Norway in Sri Lanka have written to President Maithripala Sirisena to verify the worrying information in the public domain about the intention of the Sri Lankan Government to resume implementing the death penalty after a moratorium of more than 40 years, an EU statement said today. The diplomatic missions have made known in their letter that they strongly and unequivocally oppose capital punishment in all circumstances and in all cases. “The death penalty is incompatible with human dignity, does not have any proven deterrent effect, and allows judicial errors to become fatal and irreversible,” the statement said. The diplomatic missions have requested the President to maintain the moratorium on the implementation of the death penalty and to uphold Sri Lanka’s tradition of opposition to capital punishment. The letter has been signed by the Delegation of the European Union to Sri Lanka, the British High Commission in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of France in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Germany in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Italy in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Romania in Sri Lanka, the High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Sri Lanka.

Officials have already identified 18 convicts who are on death row who will be taken to the gallows.

No execution have taken place in Sri Lanka since 1976 and as a result new hangmen are to be recruited for the hanging.  (Colombo Gazette)

Offer to send these drug dealers to these excellent countries.

  2. Any country can write and make comments about the decisions that the government has been made, but not a country helps for preventative solutions. What is the step that taken by the present government has to implement . Our present and future generations are more valuable for the country. Has to block and check all entries to the country by sea or air and screens all passengers. If this death penalty implements the respective law and the judgment has to be strict to any person who is involved in dangerous drug trafficking, selling, using transporting, in position and smuggling. Big or small , rich or poor or influential has face gets punishment. People misunderstand’s , if nobody involves nobody will get punished and the law will be their for the reputation and the country’s future prosper. Nobody has to worries other than who involves.

Sri Lanka is the only country in the world having a joker as President. Now whole world can see what Jokers can do.

When we were fighting the LTTE specially Norway and the EU was dead against our Tri forces trying to counter the LTTE violence. They used many strategies to scuttle the counter operations but our leaders stood their grounds asking the EU n Norway to keep off our affairs and lead the forces to victory. It’s time we tell these foreign powers where to go and eradicate this narcotics menace from Sri Lanka. It remains to be seen yet if this political outfit got what it needs to tell Norway n EU where to go

It is a very simple proposition. Get caught dealing drugs in large commercial quantities and you will be executed. Don’t deal in drugs(which are a scourge in Western countries with lax deterrent legislation) and you will not have a problem.

The death penalty for drug dealing maybe Sri Lanka’s opportunity to reduce the number of scum in parliament.

Every Sri Lankan regardless of their political affiliations needs to back the president to the hilt on this course of action.
