Peace process enters crucial phase

Despite the occasional hiccup, the peace process once again went into top gear last week with problems relating to the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) being sorted out and the Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister, Vidar Helgessen returning to Sri Lanka to work out the dates for the peace talks in Thailand.

LTTE gives stance on talks to Oslo

The preliminary round of talks between the  Sri Lankan government and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) may take place as planned earlier,   in late June or early July this year, provided two conditions are fulfilled, the LTTE has informed Norway.

A visiting Norwegian delegation was told of the Tiger stance by the LTTE's London based political strategist and chief negotiator, Anton Balasingham  in a three hour meeting on May 22.


Today is Vesak, the thrice blessed day and the picture shows a young monk and two children gearing up for the occasion in traditional style by putting up lanterns.

UNP's electoral shame

That last Monday's (20), local government election to elect members to 17 local government institutions were tainted with rigging, thuggery and violence is one more sorry indictment on this country, her people and the new United National Front (UNF) government. 

This time around, there is photographic evidence to prove that members of the United National Party including members of parliament resorted to thuggery and methods of intimidation, in order to steal votes that would ensure the UNF a resounding victory in 17 local government bodies.
