With a ministerial committee probing the multimillion dollar purchase of luxury vehicles outside tender procedure by the Presidential Secretariat which are today unaccounted for, President Chandrika Kumaratunga signalled a return to confrontational politics and the United National Front government last week rose to the challenge, deciding to defy Kumaratunga's directives.

CBK's luxury cars deal exposed

A ministerial investigation into the purchase of luxury vehicles costing over Rs. 1.1 billion by President Chandrika Kumaratunga has revealed that no tender procedure was followed and a total of 28 bullet proof luxury BMWs and Mercedes Benz cars were imported to be used by the president.

According to preliminary information revealed in the ministerial investigation which commenced on Thursday, May 30, the treasury had issued 48 letters of credit in the year 2000 alone, at a value of over US$ 10 million for the importation of the luxury vehicles.


With normalcy fast returning to the north following the signing of the MoU between the government and the LTTE, refugees are returning to their homes with their worldly possessions in the hope that peace will dawn.
