PA MPs back 18th Amendment

A majority of People’s Alliance (PA) parliamentarians are to urge President Chandrika Kumaratunga this week to support the 18th Amendment in parliament to avert a possible split in the party. A large number of PA MPs have also pressurised Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse to support the 18th Amendment to the constitution, curtailing the powers of President Chandrika Kumaratunga from dissolving parliament. The president is constitutionally empowered to dissolve parliament any time after December.

The credit card scandal involving Mangala Samaraweera is far from over. The Sunday Leader has since found that the credibility of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption is now at stake clouded in an aura of partiality. 

The partiality or the manner in which the commission concluded its case on Samaraweera’s credit card scandal has left a bad taste in the mouths of senior employees at the commission, including its Deputy Director General, A. K. Chandrakantha.
