CBK turns on the heat

THE new year dawned with President Chandrika Kumaratunga at her very best, moving behind the scenes to consolidate her lot and then move against Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's UNF government.

Despite a written assurance that she will not dissolve parliament, Kumaratunga is hard at it trying to build some manner of a coalition that would enable her to wrest control of parliament.

The Police Traffic Division last week launched an islandwide awareness programme to educate motorists as well as school children on regulations at pedestrian crossings. However, from the beginning there were indications that the programme would not create much change among local motorists who behave at times like demons once behind the wheel. Milinda calls for conscription

Economic Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda has proposed to the government the introduction of compulsory conscription to the security forces.

Minister Moragoda has said irrespective of whether there is war or peace in Sri Lanka, he strongly believes there should be conscription to instil discipline in society.

The Minister has also pointed out conscription will be a great social leveller.

Moragoda is expected to formally announce his proposal at a Defence Academy ceremony on January 15.

Contacted by The Sunday Leader, Minister Moragoda confirmed he has proposed the move to the government.

The Urban Development Authority (UDA) is suffering a loss of nearly Rs. 3000 million as a result of not collecting due rentals and project payments from clients. The substantial losses have rendered the public institution almost bankrupt.
