Trains continue to plough into people

While accidents at unprotected railway crossings are on the increase in the country, the last victim who fortunately managed to save his life was Managing Director, Upali Trading Company Limited, N.K. Sarathchandra.

He suffered a head injury and a fractured rib after a train at Endereramulla railway crossing hit his car. The car is beyond repair.

The double railway crossing at Enderamulla does not have gates to prevent motorists from hitting speeding trains.

At least 10 accidents have taken place at this spot this year according to area residents but still the Railway has not taken any serious steps to install even a temporary gate. Residents say there was a bamboo gate but later it was removed, as the Railway could not pay the gate keepers.
