Indicted PSD officers continue in service

Eleven officers attached to the Presidential Security Division (PSD) though indicted in the Panadura High Court in the case of attacking popular singers Rukantha and Chandralekha continue to serve in the PSD.

The 11 officers are Bandula Edirisinghe, Nihal Wijeysiri, Sarath Kumara Rupesinghe, Leslie Chandrathilaka, P. Somarathne, R. Dhar- masiri, Upali Ariyadasa, Athula Senaratne, Lalindra Rajarathne, Sampath Ranasinghe and J. Karunasena.

All 11 officers are charged with carrying out the attack at Rukantha Gunetilleke and Chandralekha's residence on January 26, 2000 where both singers were assaulted and even had their hair cut during the attack.

Despite having been indicted  by the Panadura High Court, DIG, PSD, M. K. Illangakoon has not suspended the 11 officers from service and they continue to be employed within the ranks of officers to provide security for President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Departmental regulations require an officer charged in court to be interdicted pending the determination of the case. Former PSD Director, Nihal Karunaratne was interdicted after he was charged with several criminal offences.
