Backbenchers to monitor ministries

The failure of the opposition to cooperate with the government's initiative to implement oversight committees has prompted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to delegate such responsibilities to the backbenchers of the United National Front (UNF).

The creation of oversight committees is a brainchild of Premier Wickremesinghe to oversee the functions of all ministries.

However opposition members refused to extend their cooperation for the implementation of the programme.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe on Friday, September 12 decided to entrust this responsibility on the backbenchers and told them to monitor all development activities running into billions of rupees in different districts.

The Prime Minister made this decision during a two day workshop that was organised for the backbenchers by Chief Government Whip and Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe.

The workshop was held at Culture Club in Kandalama and was aimed at educating the backbenchers on the ongoing peace process and the economy.

The sessions dealing with the peace process was handled by Industries Minister Prof.G.L.Peiris while the subject regarding economy was handled by Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunewardena.
