A
fund to aid children orphaned The
"Soba Vipath Pilisarana" fund has been initiated under the
Public Trustee Department to continue the uninterrupted education of
children, whose parents have died due to natural disasters. The
trust has allocated Rs. 300 per month for each child whose parents are
affected by natural disasters. On the opening day of the trust fund, 33
children from Ratnapura, Matara, Galle, Kalutara and the Hambantota
District were selected. Well wishers have donated Rs. 5 lakhs, while the
fund will be maintained by the Small Holder Development Ministry. French
assistance sought to rehabilitate Jaffna Rehabilitation,
Resettlement and Refugees Minister, Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena met with
French Minister of State for Foreign Affairs at the Foreign Affairs
Ministry in Paris recently. The
two ministers discussed the importance of promoting closer relations
between the two countries. The Rehabilitation Minister also requested
assistance for the rehabilitation programme in Jaffna from the French
government. A
special request was also made to assist the reconstruction of the Jaffna
open air theater and for a French language center in Jaffna. Political
interference increases the number Repeated
complaints made by pedestrians to the authorities regarding pavement
hawkers have fallen on deaf ears. While the number of pavement hawkers is
on the increase, pedestrians are forced to risk their lives and walk on
the roads. Speaking
to The Sunday Leader, Colombo Deputy Mayor Azath Sally said it is the
ministers, MPs and politicians that rule Colombo city.
