Political interference increases the number
of illegal pavement hawkers

Repeated complaints made by pedestrians to the authorities regarding pavement hawkers have fallen on deaf ears. While the number of pavement hawkers is on the increase, pedestrians are forced to risk their lives and walk on the roads.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Colombo Deputy Mayor Azath Sally said it is the ministers, MPs and politicians that rule Colombo city.

"As far as I'm concerned the pavement is for the pedestrians and the road for traffic," said Sally. According to him, he doesn't have the authority to remove illegal pavement hawkers. "Identity cards have been issued to all legal pavement hawkers. However, the number of pavement hawkers keep increasing due to political interference and police is not taking action," he said.
