Journalist Hussein to proceed with legal action

Journalist Asiff Hussein is to proceed with legal action against his removal from the post of editor, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, The Sunday Leader learns.

Hussein, a journalist attached to the Sunday Observer was unanimously elected as editor at the last AGM of the society held on March 29.

However a fellow council member, Susantha Goonetilleke who contended that Hussein being an undergraduate student of the Open University was unsuitable to edit an academic journal questioned Hussein's academic credentials. Hussein is a final year student reading for his BA degree in social sciences at the Open University.

A resolution to the effect that Hussein be asked to step down from the post and instead take over as editor of the newsletter was placed before a special general meeting held on August 23. A vote was taken to proceed with the resolution with 34 voting for and 19 against.

An amendment to the resolution that Hussein be removed forthwith from his office of editor was subsequently proposed by Neville Karunatilleke and seconded by Methsiri Cooray upon which the editor and others left the meeting protesting that such a move was illegal as it went beyond the resolution. The house subsequently passed the amendment by a show of hands with 34 for, three against and six abstaining.

Chairman, Press Complaints Commission, Sam Wijesinghe pointed out that the rules of the society did not have any stipulation regarding the academic qualifications of the editor.

Lt.Cdr.Somasiri Devendra, a past vice president and a longstanding member also pointed out instances of past editors who did not have any academic qualifications. Hussein meanwhile told The Sunday Leader that he believed the move to remove him was motivated by malicious intentions.
