Hussein to proceed with legal action
Asiff Hussein is to proceed with legal action against his removal from the
post of editor, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka, The Sunday Leader
a journalist attached to the Sunday Observer was unanimously elected as
editor at the last AGM of the society held on March 29.
a fellow council member, Susantha Goonetilleke who contended that Hussein
being an undergraduate student of the Open University was unsuitable to
edit an academic journal questioned Hussein's academic credentials.
Hussein is a final year student reading for his BA degree in social
sciences at the Open University.
resolution to the effect that Hussein be asked to step down from the post
and instead take over as editor of the newsletter was placed before a
special general meeting held on August 23. A vote was taken to proceed
with the resolution with 34 voting for and 19 against.
amendment to the resolution that Hussein be removed forthwith from his
office of editor was subsequently proposed by Neville Karunatilleke and
seconded by Methsiri Cooray upon which the editor and others left the
meeting protesting that such a move was illegal as it went beyond the
resolution. The house subsequently passed the amendment by a show of hands
with 34 for, three against and six abstaining.
Press Complaints Commission, Sam Wijesinghe pointed out that the rules of
the society did not have any stipulation regarding the academic
qualifications of the editor.
