The tussle to be TULF leader  

Last week’s no-confidence motion that was passed against Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) Leader V. Anandasangari has given a new twist to Tamil politics in Sri Lanka. Both Anandasangari and the party’s Senior Vice President Joseph Parajasingham last week were seen exchanging accusations against each other. Anandasangari concluded by saying this “is a heavy blow” to the Tamil community while Parajasingham was only too keen to pin Anandasangari down on the basis he had failed to abide by certain principles the party adopted some time ago.

Q: The TULF appears to be in troubled waters. What is the current status and as the senior vice president of the party how do you foresee a possible solution?

A: I don’t say that the TULF is in a crisis. The party high command known as the Central Working Committee met last Sunday and passed a resolution of no confidence against the party President Mr. Anandasangari. Twenty five members of the 37-committee members who were present endorsed this resolution. Once a no confidence motion is passed against the leader of a party it is proper on the part of the incumbent concerned to voluntarily relinquish his duties because 70% of the members have voted expressing they have no confidence in the party president.
