Peace
talks likely to resume in June Negotiations
between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are
likely to kick-start in late June this year. The
groundwork has already been laid and the LTTE has suggested three foreign
destinations for the discussions. The
destinations named by the rebels are Ireland, South Africa and Italy.
However, the government is yet to give its stamp of approval for a venue. V.
Rudrasingham from the LTTE is tipped to lead the LTTE peace delegation
this time round while former UN diplomat Jayantha Dhanapala has been
chosen to play a prominent role in the peace talks. Dhanapala was recently
appointed as an adviser to President Chandrika Kumaratunga, especially
with a view to structuring future negotiations. Government
sources voiced confidence that the talks would kick-off despite concerns
voiced by the LTTE on contradictory positions adopted on the peace process
by Kumaratunga and her Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. Norwegian
facilitators however maintain that the future of the peace process will be
judged by them on Kumaratunga's actions and not her statements.
