A government on the defensive

While the government was tottering last week with the opposition deciding to act as a collective force in parliament following the disgraceful behaviour by ruling Freedom Alliance members, the LTTE too struck a warning note that the peace process was on the brink of collapse throwing President Chandrika Kumaratunga's plans for constitutional reforms into disarray.

Having dissolved parliament at a time the economy was making a rapid recovery with a growth rate of over six percent in comparison to the negative growth inherited from Kumaratunga and the peace process on the verge of resuming and with it the trickling in of the US$ 4.5 billion pledged in aid, the UPFA has in two months brought the country to the door of anarchy and is none too wise to the fact.
