First class cricket not a 'must' for board presidents

By Bro. Nimal Gurusinghe

The constitution of the Board of Control for the Cricket in Sri Lanka says a person to contest and be elected as the President should have played first class cricket. My personal belief is that it should not be. A person who has played first class cricket may not be a good administrator. He also may not be competent to be the head of the Cricket Board.

According to my thinking, a person to be the President of the Cricket Board, should be an honest and sincere man who could command the respect of the other committee members. He should be competent to handle matters pertaining to the Cricket Board. He must be an influential person who could get things done for the benefit of our cricket. For example, if we take the late Gamini Dissanayake, he was a real go getter. He played a major role in getting Sri Lanka to I.C.C. status. Today if Sri Lanka is playing test cricket, it was due to his hard work and influence. But he was not a great cricketer. All the same he had the knack and ability to put Sri Lanka cricket on the correct path.

As we all know to improve cricket finances play a very great role. To bring financial stability to the Cricket Board the President should be very diplomatic and tactful. It does not mean that he should be dishonest. If we allow only the people who have played 1st class cricket to be the President many respectable and sincere persons who could put the Cricket Board finances on a sound footing have no way of becoming the cricket Head. Ultimately the loser is King Cricket.

A person who becomes the President should be able to keep very good rapport with the I.C.C. and other countries, especially Test Cricket playing nations, for that you must be an acceptable and social person. It will be difficult always to find people of this calibre from the past first class cricketers.

I am sure our readers have understood my point. In the Cricket Board the President's job is to be a good all round administrator. For that we need a very competent and skilled person who will bring our  cricket to a very high standard. It is high time we amend the constitution and get the services of capable and honest people. Then Sri Lanka Cricket can go from strength to strength.
