Major General Shantha Kottegoda assumed duties as the 17th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army on July 1. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda was a member of the back up team for the Sri Lankan government delegation that negotiated with the Liberation Tigers in 2002. Maj. Gen. Kottegoda joined the Light Infantry of the Sri Lanka Army as a cadet officer on February 5, 1970 in the third intake. In 1973, he took the young officers' course in India and later Company Support (Weapons) Course there. Kottegoda is highly respected in the army and is described as a true officer and a gentleman
