Malaysia beckons Lankan tourists
Malaysia is stepping up efforts to woo
more Sri
Lankan tourists to its shores. With the
intensifying war severely restricting inland
travel, more and more Sri Lankans our
looking beyond its shores for vacationing.
Last year about 860,000 Sri Lankans
travelled abroad compared to 700,000 in
2005. Out of the 860,000 who went abroad
last year an estimated 31,000 Sri Lankan
tourists visited Malaysia last year.
Tourism flow from Sri Lanka to Malaysia
grew by 58.6 percent and until this July,
24,000 people had visited Malaysia,
indicating significant growth. But Malaysian
tourism promoters say the figure could soon
multiply as more Sri Lankans are becoming
aware of the many opportunities and
attractions that Malaysia has on offer.
Accessibility with 11 direct flights out
of Colombo every week to Malaysia is another
positive factor, noted Tourism Malaysia’s
Director for India, P. Manoharan who led a
10-member delegation to Colombo last week.
SriLankan Airlines flies seven times to
Malaysia every week, while Malaysia Airlines
has four weekly flights.
Taking note of this rapid growth Malaysia
has termed Sri Lanka an emerging market in
South Asia, making it the next important
market after India, which sent about 400,000
visitors last year to Malaysia. Quick on the
draw Malaysia is offering a myriad of
holiday packages customised to suit the Sri
Lankan visitor.
"We want to target the leisure market and
the corporate sector. Sri Lankan travellers
consider Malaysia a safe destination. We
have a lot to offer from shopping, holiday
destinations to our cuisine, and we are
competitively priced as well," said
Manoharan. Leading Malaysian hoteliers and
tour operators were in Colombo last week to
promote the country’s attractive
destinations to the Sri Lankan travel
industry.
One is spoiled for choice from an endless
variety of travel packages - eco-adventures,
golfing, homestays, angling, weddings,
honeymoons, health and wellness, or, better
still, create your dream holiday. Be it a
family vacation, romantic sojourn or
backpacking holiday, Malaysia boasts of
endless holiday options, offering exciting
and unique experiences all year round.
Meanwhile a large number of Sri Lankans
have chosen to study in Malaysia due to its
internationally recognised programmes,
affiliations with foreign universities,
highly qualified academic staff, affordable
course fees and cost of living as well as
the friendly and conducive environment.
Travellers can select their accommodation
from among various well-appointed hotels,
five-star resorts and budget inns located
throughout the country.

Langkawi
Off the coast of Kedah is a cluster
of 99 islands with the best of many
worlds; beautiful beaches, world-class
infrastructure, mangroves rich in flora
and fauna, ultra-cheap duty-free
shopping and fascinating legends.
Langkawi has a lingering legend woven
into its history. Ask anyone in Langkawi
about the tragic legend of a beautiful
young lady named Mahsuri, and you’ll
hear a tale of love, jealousy and a
curse that was placed upon the island by
her for seven generations.
Today, the seventh generation of
Langkawi’s inhabitants has long come and
gone, but people here still believe that
the prosperity and blessings the islands
enjoy today and the passing of the curse
is not a pure coincidence. The mysticism
of this legend can be felt in many parts
of this island, especially at Makam
Mahsuri (Mahsuri’s Mausoleum) where the
famous legendary figure is said to be
buried. Langkawi is not only geared
towards tourism. Many of the islanders
are farmers, fishermen and
entrepreneurs. Experience the beautiful
countryside and the peaceful landscape
of paddy fields by renting a car and
taking a leisurely drive around the
island.

Dark Knight
With just one year having passed after
taking out Ra’s Al Ghul’s plan to have
Gotham eliminated and the mysterious
disappearance of Dr. Jonathan Crane AKA the
Scarecrow, and after the city was nearly
plundered with his toxins, Bruce Wayne and
his vigilante alter-ego the Batman, continue
the seemingly endless effort to bring order
to Gotham, with the help of Lt. James Gordon
and newly appointed District Attorney Harvey
Dent. But a new threat has now emerged into
the streets.
The Dark Knight faces a rising
psychopathic criminal called The Joker,
whose eerie grin, laughter, and inhuman
morality makes him as dangerous than what he
has yet to unleash. It becomes an agenda to
Batman to stop the mysterious Joker at all
costs, knowing that both of them are in an
opposite line.
One has no method at all and seeks to see
the world plunge into the fire he has yet to
light. One represents the symbol of hope and
uses his own shadow to bring the peace and
order he has yet to accomplish doing.
