Those who drink green tea for the first time would naturally love the taste and aroma that comes with it. The feeling that you are in the midst of a tea garden, when the smell of the fresh brew emanating from the cup, when it reaches your sensation of smell, is itself divine. The key to green tea’s healthfulness is that it is not oxidized or fermented as black tea. Black tea is hand rolled or by machine, and this ruptures the plant cells and exposes the enzymes to oxidization.
What are the origins of green tea?
Although, the history of green tea in Sri Lanka is recent, the origin of tea itself is raw green tea as one popular parable is that the Chinese Emperor Shen Nong started it quite by accident, over four thousand years ago. One day while relaxing in his garden and preparing to drink hot water, as was his custom at the time, a leaf broke free from a nearby plant and fell into the hot water. Amazingly, when he tasted the mixture, he found it to his liking. He immediately began the search for different varieties and tastes and the world of tea was thus born.
Why is green tea so special?
It is not only about instant energy or weight loss; green tea benefits us in numerous ways, and has been used by mankind for centuries. It detoxifies the blood, which in turn stops acne. As far as the skin is concerned, green tea does wonders. Besides being great for ulcers and healing wounds, it is an amazing cancer deterrent. Green tea boosts the production of insulin in the body, which in turn obstructs the absorption of glucose into the bloodstream. Green tea is great for the hair and scalp. Just use green tea to rinse your hair and see what happens. Polyphenols in green tea help in accelerating the fatty food metabolism in the body. The digestive tract is also aided in the absorption of fats in the body. Green tea strengthens the immune system of our body. This helps us in a big way to fight off infections and diseases that are waiting to attack. So much more in one cup of FADNA Green Tea. What more could you ask for?
How is FADNA Green Tea unique?
FADNA Green Tea is so special because it consists of a superior and scientifically balanced blend of both Green Tea and Gotukola. Historically, Gotukola has also been used to treat syphilis, hepatitis, stomach ulcers, mental fatigue, epilepsy, diarrhea, fever, and asthma and it contributes the required food for the brain. FADNA Green Tea is therefore a complete nutritious beverage in every sense of the word.
The art of drinking a cup of FADNA Green Tea?
The brewing of green tea is a classic art. Pour hot water over the Fadna Green Tea, but not boiling. The best method is to boil water like you would for regular tea, but let it sit for two minutes before pouring into your tea pot. After letting it stew for three minutes, remove the tea bag and let the drink settle for another two minutes before drinking it in pleasurable sips.
Does FADNA have a compatible production line?
Manufactured under the technical guidance of the Ministry of Agriculture, and using world class modern technology vows for the high quality of Fadna Green Tea. The product has also been awarded the prestigious HACCP and ISO 9001-2000 certifications in addition to the ‘GMP Quality Standard’ awarded by Sri Lanka Standards for Good Manufacturing Practices. It is also HALAAL CERTIFIED by the Jamiyyathul Ulama of Sri Lanka.

FADNA Green Tea is available at Pharmacies, Arpico and Keells Super Markets and also other departmental stores. Call us on 5666616 and visit our website www.fadna.com for further details.
To come out refreshing from a stressful day, enjoy a wonderful cup of FADNA Green Tea and boost your image.

Chinese cuisine is not only has the good-looking, but also is tasty, simply because in Chinese cooking, presentation is as critical as flavor. Chinese cuisine originated from the Chinese royal courts dating back to the Qing Dynasty, which might be any time from 1644 to 1912. In order to delight the Emperor along with the other royals, the chefs had to take a great deal of effort, this had led to the most elegant and tasty dishes. If the cook failed to do so could lead to a fate far worse than mere unemployment! The legacy of these chefs is reflected in modern day Mandarin cookery.

Chinese cookery being the cultural centre of China, combines influences from all the other Chinese provinces in its own individual style. Colorful vegetables are with mild spices and contrasting flavors and textures such as sweet and sour or crisp and smooth are mixed to generate a marvelous mixture of colors and scents. Even snack food is presented in a fancy way. For instance spring onions (salad onions) can be coated with dark soy paste and arranged on a platter with sliced boiled egg yoke to look like a flower or elaborately carved carrots and beetroot could possibly be used for color and texture.

The look of breakfast as well ought to delight all of the senses and this might be a healthy stir fried tomato dish served with scrambled eggs.

The staple of Mandarin cuisine is wheat as opposed to rice so pancakes or wraps frequently feature, containing spiced beef or pork. The pancakes, even though basically a blend of water and flour will likely be flavored, perhaps with chili or sesame oil.
Among these Chinese cuisine, one of the best famous and simplest to make dishes is hot and sour soup. That staple of the Chinese takeaway combines bamboo shoots along with a variety of mushrooms for texture with chilies for warmth and vinegar for sourness. Another favorite would be the Mandarin equivalent of a fondue, which is a pan of simmering beef or chicken stock which you can use to cook shredded chicken or beef, prawns, leafy green vegetables, mushrooms and egg noodles, whilst you sit at the table.

If you are eager to eat really royal and genuine Chinese foods, just go to a Mandarin feast, home cooked or at a restaurant. I am sure you will addict to it.

In the era gone by, a water bottle did not pour forth exciting news. Then came Nishantha Delgoda, with SPEED and its advancement came speedily too.
Managing Director and Owner of SPEED Water Systems Nishantha Delgoda is an enigma. He forged ahead with SPEED which began to branch out both in terms of quality and quantity.
First he obtained SLS standardization and then he sent pure bottled water to places as far and as varied as Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Matara and Balapokuna Road. SPEED Water Shops began to spring up in all parts of the country.
The water is pure, the water is sought after and the water is trusted
Then came WATER FOR KIDS, an exciting new concept which was unique. Parents often worry about the kind of water their children drink. Nishantha Delgoda and his team at SPEED allayed all fears. SPEED’s Water for Kids broke new ground.
A home and office delivery service made SPEED complete in this modern day and age.
All this was enough to put Nishantha Delgoda at the top of the spring water business in Sri Lanka.
As if all this was not enough, SPEED Water Systems last week, launched their new marketing concept of “Neighbourhood SPEED”, taking another new step in the bottled water industry of Sri Lanka.
“The Neighbourhood SPEED concept was introduced in accordance with my vision – making water more available and affordable to all,” said Delgoda speaking to The Sunday Leader.
“SPEED is now becoming the number one household brand in Sri Lanka with 25 Franchise water shops and over 25 distributors and area distributors for water distribution,” he said.
He went on to say that SPEED has been the first to launch the water shop concept in Sri Lanka and many other innovative products such as oxygenated water, Kids’ water and SPEED ice. All these have been introduced to the market as a result of SPEED’s never-resting attitude towards developing innovative products and services for the water industry in Sri Lanka.
Working through many media channels, newspapers and advertisements and working with village headmen, temples and churches, etc., SPEED approached hundreds of ordinary people who were interested and gathered them together in order to appoint Franchise neighborhood units making water more available and affordable to all.
“SPEED has a concept involving laymen to market our products through franchise distribution,” said Delgoda
At a launch held in Kirulapone, Delgoda and his consultants speaking to a gathering of people from Colombo, Matara, Anuradhapura, Galle, and Ratnapura, explained how SPEED franchise units will be established on every street – converting garages of affluent people in the city and homes in villages.
Every franchisee is promised a 30% return on investment and for the operation. SPEED with its motto of making water more affordable and available to all is assuring the same price of Rs 165 per bottle across the country.
SPEED is an ISO 9001, 2000 certified company which assures health safety, while its ISO 22000 (HACCP) confirms customers’ health safety through a food safety management system obtained from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI). SPEED is also confirmed under SLSI 894 and registered and approved by the Health ministry and is constantly monitored by the “International Water Association” and “Indian Water Works”.
SPEED was incorporated in 2003 and is the brain child of its owner and Managing Director Nishantha Delgoda with professional and technical guidance from its sister concern SRITRIMS (Far East) Ltd., in Hong Kong. SRITRIMS is one of the leading brands in the apparel industry in Hong Kong with a manufacturing unit in China catering to buyers in Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, Vietnam, the United Kingdom, India and Pakistan. SRITRIMS (Far East) Ltd., which is owned by Delgoda caters to over 25 countries and to the leading apparel brands supplying quality products supported by Oeko-tex Standard 100 confirming that its goods are free of harmful substances.
Delgoda spoke about the expansion of ISO 14000 for Environment-friendly product certification and future plans for waste management systems with respect to the bottled water industry as well as other industries and also contributing to the environment of Sri Lanka, which he feels is the next generation in business.

Physical exercise is a bodily activity that enhances or maintains physical fitness and the overall health and wellness of the person. It is performed for various reasons, including the strengthening of muscles and the development of the cardiovascular system. It hones athletic skills and helps achieve and maintain ideal body weight. It is also done for enjoyment purposes. Frequent and regular physical exercise boosts the immune system and helps prevent the “diseases of affluence” such as heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and Type 2 diabetes. It is also reported to improve one’s mental health. For instance, it is known to help overcome depression, to promote or maintain positive self esteem, and to augment an individual’s body image, which is in turn found to be linked with higher levels of self esteem. In the case of children, childhood obesity is a growing global concern and physical exercise may help overcome excessive body weight issues in children.
Most of us know that exercise is essential in keeping to a healthy lifestyle, but the problem for so many of us is finding the time to do it. With our busy daily schedules and various demands on our time, making the decision to get to that workout may seem impossible. But if you re-evaluate your daily habits and decisions, with a right action plan in place, along with a little commitment and consistency, you can curb those extra pounds, increase your energy, and stay fit and healthy with the help of Quantum Tele-Shopping.
Chinese medical treatment especially acupuncture is fast becoming a vastly recognized and extremely popular treatment option.
Deshabandu, Deshashakthi, Deshamanya Dr. Prasad Deshapriya, Director, Kalubowila Acupuncture Clinic has been practicing the healing powers of acupuncture for many years and speaks highly of its success in battling many health problems.
Obesity is fast becoming a major problem in today’s world. Does Acupuncture offer a solution for this?
Yes it does. Obesity is attributed to layers of fat settling under our skin. There are quite a few reasons for this such as the consumption of artificial and fast food, the excessive intake of sweets and lack of exercise.
There are many consequences to obesity. A decrease in productivity, constant tiredness, inability to even keep standing due to the excess amount of weight carried are some of the general resultant problems. However situations like difficulties during child birth, paralysis, diabetes and arthritis are some of the dire repercussions.
By applying acupuncture needles to the specific acu-points as well as by using the press needle system, electric stimulator and cosmetic operator, not only can unwanted fat be removed but obesity itself can be controlled.
Are there any acupuncture treatments for beauty and cosmetic purposes?
Acupuncture can treat wrinkles caused prematurely, laughter and worry lines, premature sagging of the skin, pimples, acne, discolouration of the skin, dark circles and much more. For this type of treatments special gold, silver or copper needles are used on the acu-points. The cosmetic operator machine and color therapy also adds to the beauty enhancing treatments available.
What are the other types of ailments and diseases that can be cured through acupuncture?
Acupuncture can be used to successfully treat all manner of problems ranging from paralysis, stunted growth, anorexia, premature loss of hair, catarrh, wheezing, eczema, arthritis, sexual deficiencies and alcoholism, etc.
The Kalubowila Acupuncture Clinic (situated on De Silva Road, Kalubowila) can be visited on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8.00 a.m. – 12 noon, on Saturdays and Sundays from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m. and on other days between 8.00 a.m. to 12 noon and from 4.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Sri Lanka has a proud and long history of harnessing natural resources to supplement food and other nutrients required for good health and wellbeing. These traditional products were sidelined and sometimes even ignored during colonial rule. With the passage of time people’s energy and a sense of wellbeing had depleted and they have now returned to the resources of nature to restore their health and wellbeing, which is nature’s gift to mankind.
FADNA Diabe Tea is a blend of totally natural Bitter Gourd with Green Tea. The bitter gourd is specifically used as a folk medicine for diabetes. Recent research has established that it contains a hypoglycemic or insulin-like property, designated as ‘plant-insulin’, which has been found to be highly beneficial in lowering blood and urine sugar levels.
Research conducted on people who have used Diabe Tea indicates a phenomenal level of efficacy. It has also been accepted that Bitter Gourd is an effective agent in the control of sugar disorders. The consumption of Diabe Tea for a period of 10 days will demonstrate this efficacy. Upon the completion of 10 days of consumption a blood test should be undertaken so that Diabe Tea can be controlled and monitored and consumed only in quantities required to maintain the standards of control. Recent research conducted by the Research Institute of the Ayurveda Department has confirmed that the symptoms usually associated with diabetes such as abnormal thirst, profuse perspiration and irregular urination are also dispelled with the regular consumption of Diabe Tea.
Mrs. Camela Peris, from Nawala who enjoys the benefits of Diabe Tea, said, “It is an excellent product. It keeps my sugar level under control. I take it once a day and it actually helps to keep me in good health.”
Mrs. Perera, from Moratuwa who witness¬es the benefits elaborat¬ed, “I’m now 84 years old and suffering from dia¬betes. I take Diabe Tea twice a day on an empty stomach and carry on with my normal routine unhindered. I have taken so many kinds of tablets but they would not reduce the sugar level as much as Diabe tea has.”
Mr. R. George, a teacher added, “The effect of Diabe Tea is unbelievable and fantastic. I don’t know why others are not taking this heavenly gift. If you begin to use this product, you too would wit¬ness an immediate change like I did, since originally I had a high level of diabetes.”
Mrs. Vinitha Ranjani from Maharagama stated, “It is an admirable product and we can use it conveniently as it is in tea bag form. Above all, my sugar level which was between150-160 has now reduced to 86 points. That is why I appreciate Diabe Tea very much.”
The product is packaged to comply with international standards. The factory has obtained HACCP and ISO 9001:2000 certification. Food & Nature (Pvt) Ltd. is a company certified and awarded for general principles of food hygiene by the GMP System and all the products of FADNA are Halal certified. The Company has also been certified by the Department of Ayurveda of the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine of Sri Lanka. Importantly, the Department of Ayurveda confirms that the herbal teas produced by Food & Nature (Pvt) Ltd. can be consumed without a prescription and are suitable for general use. Dr. D. B. T.
Hemas Hospitals has become the first Sri Lankan hospital to receive international accreditation from the prestigious Australian Council on Healthcare Standard International (ACHSI), a leading Australian healthcare accreditation provider that delivers accreditation and quality improvement programs throughout the world including New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, the Middle East, Malaysia and many other countries.
Speaking to The Sunday Leader on the new development was Director – Medical Services of Hemas Hospitals Dr. Aruna Rabel who stated, “The accreditation was awarded to both Hemas Hospitals facilities – in Wattala and Galle and we are proud to be the first chain of healthcare facilities to receive such an international accreditation in Sri Lanka.”
According to Dr. Rabel, international accreditation is something new to the Sri Lanka healthcare sector, despite being common in developed countries. He explained that due to it being an extremely complicated and stringent process that demands certain high standards, obtaining international accreditation is quite a difficult task for any hospital.
The ceremonial awarding of the ACHSI accreditation certificate was held at the Cinnamon Lakeside June 2 amidst a gathering of distinguished guests.
He stated, “Hemas Hospitals has long been looking at bringing quality international standards to healthcare in Sri Lanka and with this accreditation we have achieved that. We looked at many different best practices in medicine: from the US, UK and Canada but we felt that Australian practices and methods were closer to what is practiced in Asia and would be best suited for Sri Lanka. After we decided, we started the project, which lasted more than a year with ACHSI professionals in setting up structures and guidelines. We learned a lot in this process, as these are practices that have been in existence since the 70’s and have stood the test of time.”
An accreditation is a formal process to ensure delivery of safe, high quality healthcare based on internationally accepted standards and processes devised and developed by healthcare professionals for healthcare services. It is public recognition of achievement by a healthcare organization of the requirements of international healthcare standards.
Accreditation systems are structured so as to provide objective measures for the external evaluation of quality and quality management. At the heart of these schemes is a list of standards which ideally, serve to evaluate in a systematic and comprehensive way the standards of professional performance in a hospital.
According to Dr. Rabel, the accreditation considers every aspect of the healthcare facility and bases its assessment on not only the standards set but on the processes that lie within the hospital as well, thus ensuring that the highest quality is met across Clinical, Corporate and Support functions to satisfy the many criteria set by ACHSI.
Dr. Rabel explained that the survey spanned clinical, support and corporate functions and includes criteria like continuity of care, access, appropriateness, effectiveness, safety, consumer participation and acceptability, risk management, HR management, application of information technology and information management, transparency in management, leadership and strategic initiatives in healthcare and continuous quality improvement – what is more, all these guidelines conform to World Health Organisation standards.
Dr. Rabel stated, “This accreditation is not just another certificate on the wall, but signifies our commitment to providing Sri Lankans the best of international healthcare.”

Mega Lifesciences, the wellness, healthcare and Drugs Company with a presence in over 50 countries, and manufacturing facilities in Thailand and Australia have introduced yet another innovative product to Sri Lanka, namely NuEnat.
Brand Manager Sri Lanka Mega Lifesciences, Udyami Peiris describing NuEnat, said that it was a capsule meant to enhance the youthfulness of one’s skin. “With time, advancing age sets in no matter what. Outside factors such as the sun’s rays, pollution and diet, all take their toll on our skin, generating an abundance of free radicals that cannot be counteracted by our bodies; we need external help, and that’s where NuEnat plays a role,” Peiris said. Elaborating further, she said that our bodies require additional reinforcements of antioxidants to defend it against and fight free radicals, which if left unchecked can damage not only our skin but most other organs as well.
“There are many antioxidants such as Vitamin E that are available in the market but virtually all of them contain only one form called alpha-tocopherol, providing partial protection against free radicals. Mega Lifesciences introduces, for the first time in Sri Lanka, a new and improved form of natural Vitamin E that contains four forms of natural Vitamin E such as alpha, beta, gamma and delta which together are known as mixed tocopherols. In other words, while the common ones in the market offer only a partial benefit, NuEnat with the four forms of Vitamin E, offers a complete benefit in terms of fighting free radicals – a very potent antioxidant effect that prevents skin damage and provides youthful and beautiful skin,” observed Peiris.
She went on to say that scientific studies have proved that the gamma and delta forms of natural Vitamin E have the highest absorption rates in the body and hence are the most beneficial.
NuEnat helps overcome signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and age spots, whilst slowing down the overall effects of aging. Consumer research has also shown that many women subsequent to using NuEnat had reported significant improvement to their hair strength and reduced hair loss.
Established in 1983, Mega Lifesciences is engaged in manufacturing, marketing, selling and distributing medicines – nutritional, herbal, OTC drugs, and prescription drugs in developing countries. Mega Lifesciences is committed to providing quality products and services to their customers through continuous improvement and innovation.
“A ‘thinking’ organization, that changes before it is forced to change, Mega Lifesciences endeavours to grow beyond each of us,” said Praveen Viswakumaran, Country Manager.
The Company’s manufacturing facilities have received international accreditation from reputed health authorities around the world with respect to good manufacturing practices and are the largest soft gelatin manufacturers in Southeast Asia. All products are manufactured under strict cGMP (continuous Good Manufacturing Practices), while the Company’s product development team has years of experience in developing soft gels, tablets, hard capsules and powders, as well as novel drug delivery systems.
NuEnat is manufactured at the Company’s plant which conforms to Australian, Danish, German and Thai quality control standards.
All Mega Lifesciences products are imported and distributed exclusively by A. Baur & Co (Pvt) Ltd. a reputed Swiss corporate established in 1897.

The new Philips AirFryer, launched with the support of the Singapore Heart Foundation, is a revolution in home cooking. It does not require additional oil in the cooking process, allowing you to fry a variety of great tasting dishes easily with just air.
The AirFryer boasts a patented Rapid Air Technology, which combines fast-circulating hot air with a grill element to create great-tasting fried food that contains up to 80 percent less fat. From chicken wings to frozen fries, and even local delights like curry puffs, the AirFryer makes it easy for families to enjoy a hearty home-cooked meal with fried dishes that have less fat.

Supported by the Singapore Heart Foundation

Vernon Kang, CEO of the Singapore Heart Foundation said, “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death. With many various risk factors involved, cutting down on oily food is one of the simple ways to lower one’s risk of having heart disease. Utilizing the Philips AirFryer is one way people can start to move towards consuming food that has less oil and fat content, and yet still enjoy eating their favourite fried food.”

Innovative Technology

The innovative appliance also comes with an Integrated Air Filter that prevents unwanted cooking smells and vapours. An Adjustable Temperature Control lets users pre-set temperatures of up to 200 degrees C, helping families cut down food preparation time immensely while still producing crispy and evenly-cooked fried food. It also requires minimal heat-up time, so that busy parents can quickly and easily prepare a batch of best tasting fries without the oil in just 12 minutes for the children.
